The Hilongos: Mangrove Reforestation and Inclusion Project

Restoring Coastal Ecosystems, Empowering Communities

The Hilongos: Mangrove Reforestation and Inclusion Project ended in February 2026 environmental initiative implemented by the Foundation for These-Abled Persons Inc. (FTI) in partnership with Life-Giving Forest e.V. (LGF), with grant support from the Stiftung Entwicklungszusammenarbeit Baden-Württemberg (SEZ) through its bwirkt! Ausland program.

FTI serves as the local implementing partner in the Philippines, carrying out project activities in Hilongos, Southern Leyte, while LGF serves as the German applicant and partner organization.

Restoring Hilongos’ Coastal Ecosystems

The project focuses on the establishment of mangrove nurseries and the planting of mangrove seedlings along the coastal areas of Hilongos. These efforts contribute to coastal protection, biodiversity conservation, and the restoration of important marine and coastal ecosystems.

Through community participation, the project encourages local residents to become active stewards of their coastal environment and supports the long-term management and protection of mangrove areas.

Promoting Inclusion

A central component of the project is inclusive community participation. Persons with disabilities and other marginalized groups are given opportunities to participate in reforestation activities, skills development, and sustainable livelihood initiatives.

By involving these groups in environmental activities, the project connects environmental protection with social inclusion and community empowerment.

Building Local Capacity

The project also provides capacity-building activities on sustainable mangrove management, equipping community members with knowledge and practical skills to maintain and protect mangrove ecosystems.

FTI also works with local authorities and community stakeholders to strengthen conservation efforts and support the implementation of environmental protection measures.

Looking Ahead

Through the combined efforts of FTI, LGF, SEZ, local communities, and government partners, the Hilongos Mangrove Reforestation and Inclusion Project contributes to healthier coastal ecosystems while creating opportunities for meaningful participation among marginalized groups.

Together, we are restoring mangroves, protecting coastal communities, and building a more inclusive and resilient future for Hilongos.
